Keyword Search: This type of search looks for any word or words in titles, subject headings, summaries, and other parts of the description of an item. It is the most inclusive type of search, but not the most accurate. Doing a Subject Search may give better results.

OR To broaden a search, use OR between terms.

woman or women or females

* To broaden a search, use an * to truncate, looking for words which have the same beginning characters.

women* -- Finds "women" or "women's" or "womens'" or "womenfolk."

You need to be careful with truncation:
wom* would find all of the words above, but also other words such as "womb," "wombat," etc.

( ) To narrow a search, type more than one word; enclose synonyms in parentheses.

(woman or women) engineering -- Finds items with the words "woman and engineering" OR "women and engineering."

(woman or women) and engineering produces the same results.

NOT To exclude a word, use NOT before each word to exclude.

mexico not new mexico -- Finds items with the word "mexico," but not "new mexico." Note, however, the danger of this search not retrieving a title such as New Economic Developments in Mexico.
